Greece offers over 6,000 islands and islets, but for yacht charters, two archipelagos dominate the conversation: the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Islands on the western coast. Both deliver stunning scenery, excellent cuisine, and ancient history — but the sailing conditions, atmosphere, and logistics differ significantly. Here is how to choose.
## The Cyclades: Dramatic Beauty and Meltemi Winds
The Cyclades include some of the most photographed islands in the world — Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, and Milos among them. The archipelago sits in the central Aegean, southeast of Athens.
**Landscape:** The Cyclades are defined by their stark, volcanic beauty. Whitewashed villages cascade down cliffsides, blue-domed churches punctuate the skyline, and rugged coastlines give way to beaches of volcanic black, red, or golden sand. Milos alone has over 70 distinct beaches.
**Sailing conditions:** This is where the Cyclades earn their reputation — and where some charterers get caught out. The Meltemi wind blows from the north between June and September, regularly reaching 20–30 knots and occasionally exceeding 35 knots. These are proper sailing conditions that demand experience for bareboat charters. Passages between islands can be rough, particularly the exposed stretches between Mykonos and Paros or Naxos and Amorgos. For crewed motor yacht charters, the Meltemi is less of a concern as modern stabilised vessels handle the conditions comfortably.
**Atmosphere:** The Cyclades lean cosmopolitan. Mykonos rivals Ibiza for nightlife intensity during peak season. Santorini draws honeymooners and fine-dining enthusiasts. Paros and Naxos offer a more balanced experience with excellent beaches, traditional villages, and a lively but not overwhelming social scene. The smaller islands — Sifnos, Serifos, Folegandros, Koufonisia — reward those willing to venture beyond the headline destinations.
**Best for:** Experienced sailors seeking challenging conditions, couples wanting glamour and Instagram-worthy scenery, food enthusiasts (Sifnos is considered the culinary capital of the Cyclades), and anyone drawn to dramatic volcanic landscapes.
## The Ionian Islands: Gentle Seas and Emerald Waters
The Ionian Islands — Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Ithaca, Paxos, and Meganisi — line Greece’s western coast, sheltered from the Aegean’s stronger winds by the mainland.
**Landscape:** Lush, green, and Italianate in character. The Ionian islands receive more rainfall than the Cyclades, producing forests of cypress and olive trees, verdant hillsides, and some of Greece’s most striking turquoise bays. Navagio Beach in Zakynthos (the famous shipwreck beach) is one of the most recognisable coastal landmarks in the Mediterranean.
**Sailing conditions:** Gentle and predictable. Winds are typically 8–15 knots from the northwest, building in the afternoon and calming by evening. Seas are sheltered, distances between islands are short (often under 10 nautical miles), and anchorages are well-protected. This makes the Ionian ideal for bareboat beginners and families with young children. The inland sea between Lefkada, Meganisi, and the mainland coast is particularly calm — essentially a vast, island-studded lagoon.
**Atmosphere:** Relaxed and family-oriented. The Ionian islands have a Venetian heritage visible in Corfu Town’s elegant architecture and Kefalonia’s village squares. The pace is slower than the Cyclades, nightlife is modest (with exceptions in Corfu Town and Zakynthos’s Laganas strip), and the focus is on swimming, hiking, taverna dining, and village exploration.
**Best for:** First-time charterers, families with children, sailors seeking easy conditions, anyone who prioritises calm anchorages and emerald swimming bays over cosmopolitan nightlife.

## Practical Planning Notes
**Getting there:** The Cyclades are served by Athens International Airport with domestic flights and fast ferries to major islands. The Ionian islands have direct European flights to Corfu, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos, plus charter base access from Lefkada (reachable by road from Preveza airport, 30 minutes).
**Season:** Both regions are best from May to October. The Ionian is slightly warmer earlier in the season due to its sheltered position. The Meltemi makes August the most challenging month in the Cyclades.
**Provisioning:** Both archipelagos have excellent local markets and tavernas, though the Cyclades’ tourist-heavy islands (Mykonos, Santorini) command premium restaurant prices. The Ionian offers better value for dining ashore.
